NON/HUMANITY is a two-week summer institute that highlights interdisciplinary approaches to the nonhuman by inviting intellectuals to workshop writing and works in progress. This seminar-style institute explores the centrality of the human in the humanities and invites reconsiderations of how the nonhuman is vital to constructing and deconstructing humanistic inquiry. The institute will be hosted in hybrid form; individuals may select to attend in-person or virtually.
We employ “non/humanity” as a term that is deliberately broad and discipline-inclusive so as to envision embodiment, theory, interconnection, and identity. We invite our participants to further explore historical, narrative, artistic, philosophical, and filmic relationships with non/humanity.
Over six days–Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for two weeks–participants will engage with four plenary speakers: Teresa Castro (Sorbonne), Serenella Iovino (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), Hil Malatino (Pennsylvania State University), and Bénédicte Boisseron (University of Michigan). In addition, participants will be placed in small, interdisciplinary groups to workshop articles, essays, conference talks, or book proposals in progress. The institute will close with a reflection on pedagogy.
To foster an intimate atmosphere that includes rigorous and constructive feedback, participation is limited to 32 individuals. Ladder faculty, adjuncts, independent scholars, and graduate students advanced to candidacy are welcome to apply. We are mindful of the care work and additional stressors that have accompanied scholarship in the pandemic, and as a result, we will offer each participant a $250 stipend upon completion of the institute.
